Can slate signs be used outdoors?
Yes. Natural slate is weatherproof and commonly used outdoors — on walls, gates, and garden fences. The engraving is cut into the surface rather than printed on, so it won't fade, peel, or wash off in the rain.
Will the slate look different to the photos on the website?
Slightly, yes. Slate is a natural material, so colour and texture vary piece to piece — some have more visible mineral flecks or banding than others. This is normal and part of what makes each sign unique, not a fault.
Can I choose where the hanging hole goes?
Yes. Let us know your preference for hole position in the order notes, or whether you'd prefer it left without one if you're mounting it a different way.
How heavy are the signs, and what do I need to hang them?
Slate is a dense material, so even the smaller signs have some weight to them. Standard picture hooks or screws into masonry work well for outdoor walls — we can advise on fixings if you let us know where it’s going.
Can I get a slate sign with a house name and number together?
Yes — this is one of our most common requests. Add both in the personalisation fields and we'll lay them out to look balanced on the sign.
Do you offer larger sizes for things like address signs at the front of a property?
Our current sizes are listed on each product page. If you need something larger or more specific to your property, get in touch and we'll see what's possible.
Is the engraving the same colour as the slate, or does it stand out?
The laser removes a thin layer of the surface to reveal a lighter tone underneath, so the text and design stand out clearly against the darker slate background.
Can slate signs be cleaned, and will cleaning damage the engraving?
A soft brush or damp cloth is enough for general upkeep. The engraving is cut into the stone itself, so normal cleaning won't affect it.
How long will a slate sign last outdoors?
Slate is one of the most durable materials we work with — it's been used on roofs and exteriors for centuries. With normal weather exposure, the sign and its engraving should last for many years.
